Today is the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary. This feast day is in commemoration of one the most decisive battles in the world and Christendom which took place October 7th, 1571. A Muslim navy which had not lost a battle in over 100 years was met by ships from The Holy League off the western coast of Greece. Pope Pius V led a procession around St. Peters Square praying the Rosary and instituted this feast day after Our Lady’s intercession which led to this crushing Muslim defeat.
