Health Care is not a Right

I watched the debate last night with my wife and older kids. If you were not practiced in Senator speak or political mumbo jumbo you might think that both candidates were essentially muddling around the middle of most policy issues. We owe a big thanks to the debate moderator, Mr. Tom Brokaw for asking a simple yet incredibly defining follow up question on health care. Is health care a privilege, a right or a responsibility? Senator Obama responded “I think it should be a right of every American”. Rights like free speech, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, the right to assemble, right to worship, redress the government, bear arms and all the other rights listed in our Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and with the natural law or God given and require nothing from anyone else. When I exercise my rights I cannot by definition require something from you. Calling health care, education, housing, etc rights is completely preposterous as each of these requires some material aspect to be taken from someone and given to someone else. Senator Obama’s answer clearly illustrates his world view is in line with all manner of communists and socialists in stark contrast to our country’s founding fathers and the documents they generated to govern this great country. Beware America.
