A recent survey of 1,000 of adults found 57% believe “God's intervention could save a family member even if physicians declared that treatment would be futile”. At first blush this would seem to be a solid majority “for” God but with Americans regularly exceeding 90% in surveys questioning a belief in God this recent survey raises more questions than it answers. Foremost in my mind would be why if 90% believe in God do only 57% believe He may be able to stop death? Do they believe that the Author of life cannot create, alter, renew life or stop death and/or disease as He sees fit? That would seem to be a rather limited definition of divine don’t you think? It would seem to indicate a belief that there are things outside God’s purview, limits to His power. Or perhaps they simply believe that God does not care what happens to His children, which again is a rather stunted view of God and His relationship with us. Poorly catechized might be more accurate. At any rate the fullness of God’s love for us does not seem to be recognized by a solid number of Americans. God created us to love Him, to serve Him and to be with Him. He as the Author of life can create, modify or alter life as He sees fit. His answer to our prayers may be yes, no or not yet, but His love for us is real and so radically profound that He sent His only Son to die on a cross and be raised again so that we may have eternal life with Him.
