I have finished reading Scott Hahn's book "Reasons to Believe". As always Hahn has brought wonderful insights into our Church, its Tradition and Magisterium to our attention in a manner that is "easy" on ones mind. The trick is always bringing the difficult or sublime into the light of day for the layman and he has accomplished this once again. In the last chapter entitled "The Catholic Lifetime Reading Plan Hahn points out that a 19th century theologian Matthias Scheeben criticized Catholics for debating Protestants by focusing on points of dispute instead of the essentials of faith. Scheeben notes that The Council of Trent provided a serious response to Protestant questions on justification and Catholics ignored it. Only in recent decades have Catholics begun to employ the methods proposed by the Council and the results have been remarkable with the world's Lutherans, minus the Missouri Synod, signing a "Joint Declaration on Justification" and numerous Lutherans coming into full communion with Rome. What a blessing to have The Vicar of Christ leading our church thru the ages.
