In the run up to yesterdays Democratic presidential primary in Pennsylvania Nora Ephron published an opinion piece on the Huffington Post. I enjoyed her work in “Sleepless in Seattle”, “You’ve Got Mail”, “Michael” but this post illustrates most clearly that the modern liberal lives a joyless life with little love, hope or charity. With regard to the Pennsylvania primary she writes, “Whom are we kidding? This is an election about whether the people of Pennsylvania hate blacks more than they hate women. And when I say people, I don't mean people, I mean white men. How ironic is this? After all this time, after all these stupid articles about how powerless white men are and how they can't even get into college because of overachieving women and affirmative action and mean lady teachers who expected them to sit still in the third grade even though they were all suffering from terminal attention deficit disorder -- after all this, they turn out (surprise!) to have all the power. (As they always did, by the way; I hope you didn't believe any of those articles.)” More snippets include “white men cannot be relied on, as all of us know who have spent a lifetime dating them.” and “A lot of white men have terrible tempers, and what's more, they think its normal.” Notice the prism through which she views our world? White men cannot possibly be for a candidate, female or black; they are motivated simply by hate to vote against a woman or a black. White men have always held the power to include and to exclude women and blacks from participation in public life despite all those articles to the contrary, no doubt planted by yet more white men to obfuscate their influence. Thanks goodness Ephron’s Gnostic abilities are there to save us! White men are unreliable, have terrible tempers, etc. I submit that perhaps the white men Ephron has the most experience with in her life are politically liberal, socially and spiritually effeminate men constantly required to deny their manhood and their very nature to remain within the clique. One would think that the educational, social and political elites would be happy, well adjusted people and yet vast numbers seem anything but happy. Material success seems to have bred the impulse to expunge God, faith, values and morals from society and the body politic. Won’t it be a great day when these elites start to bring life’s joy and happiness to the places they live and work.
