Advent is upon us. This is a favorite time of year as work usually slows down dramatically from Thanksgiving until mid January which allows me to really enjoy Christmas and the other holidays. This year fewer kids are involved in winter sports than normal so I am looking forward to a more leisurely pace for the holidays. We will go to confession on Saturday and put up the outdoor crèche, sans baby Jesus naturally and the lights both indoor and out. We are planning on holding off on the Christmas tree until further into Advent because while we love the Christmas music which fills the air the overall commercialization of Christmas starting with Black Friday is completely over the top. We have been trying to align ourselves with the true Christmas season over the past couple of years with some success. This Advent we will try to incorporate a true day of rest on Sunday by limiting outside activities and spending more time together playing the games the kids love and by turning dinner into more of an event. Hopefully as I teach the kids about the rich symbolism of Advent its true meaning will be more fully revealed.
