The following are a few books I have read in the past year which I highly recommend for your reading pleasure.
A Canticle for Liebowitz by Walter M. Miller, Jr.
This book is a fine science fiction effort integrating a faithful view of the Church and her role in history. It is broken into 3 parts, Fiat Homo, “Let there be Man”; Fiat Lux, “Let there be Light” and Fiat Voluntas Tua, “Let Thy Will be Done” each set some 600 years apart in the distant future after mankind has destroyed most of itself with the technological achievements of an inventive mind unfortunately not matched with an equally prodigious development of humanity, compassion, grace, etc. If you are looking for a fine book of science fiction infused with Catholic values look no further, buy this book and enjoy!
The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis
Lewis stated that this book was not necessarily about Purgatory. If it isn’t, I am not sure what is about. Given some artistic license regarding movement between Purgatory, Heaven and Hell this book is clearly about those things which keep us from Heaven and lead us to Hell. Various characters cling to pride, talent, love, a sense of duty, whatever may dominate their souls and attempt to argue their way into keeping whatever may actually prevent them from attaining Heaven! Very enjoyable.
Walden by Henry David Thoreau
I read this book last summer for the first time since the early 1970’s. I think I will start every summer reading it. I may have thought it good in my youth but after 8 kids, 20 years of marriage and developing and growing a business I can firmly state that this book is wasted on youth! This book, along with Josef Pieper’s “Leisure, The Basis of Culture” are must reads for all folks enduring the rat race!
