The Swiss have held a referendum and voted to ban construction of any minarets. Currently 4 mosques have minarets which are unaffected by the referendum. Predictably the Swiss bishops have put forth a statement lamenting the referendum because it will “aggravates interfaith tensions and could have negative repercussions on Christian minorities in Muslim countries”.
“The decision of the people represents an obstacle and a great challenge on the path of integration in dialogue and mutual respect," the bishops said. Banning the building of minarets "increases the problems of coexistence between religions and cultures," they said. The bishops said the measure "will not help the Christians oppressed and persecuted in Islamic countries, but will weaken the credibility of their commitment in these countries."
The real obstacle to interfaith dialogue is of course Islam, churches being prohibited in Saudi Arabia, bibles banned but hey lets not aggravate Muslims you know how they get! I think it is high time that Europe defend its patrimony. Go Swiss!!!
