President Obama was recently overhead weighing in on Kanye West’s treatment of Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards. The comments were tweeted by ABC staffers in violation of the “off the record protocol” which created a bit of a firestorm both for the President’s “jackass” comment but all so for his being “tweeted “off the record. The entire exchange is as follows:
““I thought that was really inappropriate," Obama says. "What are you butting in (for)? ... The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person. She's getting her award. What's he doing up there?"
A questioner chimes in, "Why would he do it?"
"He's a jackass," Obama replies, which is met with laughter from several people.
The president seems to quickly realize he may have gone too far, and jovially appeals to those assembled that the remark be kept private. "Come on guys," he says. "Cut the president some slack. I've got a lot of other stuff on my plate."”
Two points need to be made regarding this exchange: The first point is the media were clearly in the wrong to tweet the President’s comments. The fact that they were tweeted vs. a more traditional approach is not germane, the fact that this needs to be pointed out to the media reflects how poorly these media “professionals” have been taught and trained. The second point is the President’s referring to himself in the 3rd person, “Cut the president some slack” is disturbing. Typically a person who refers to himself in the 3rd person is in serious need of help, both emotional and psychological. Perhaps the President was engaging his youthful questioners on their level, if so he missed an opportunity to elevate both himself and the office. I do not want a president who changes to meet the times, I want an embodied, spiritually and physically integrated president who leads. Period.
