I went with our 3 oldest kids camping with the BRICK teen youth group in Wilderness State Park this past week. 37 teens, 14 adults, 19 tents, no running water and pit toilets!! To some it may sound like a recipe for disaster but 5 days unplugged in the outdoors was just this side of heaven. The kids played volleyball for hours every day on “our” beach as the wilderness campground is separated from the modern campground by a mile of woods. With 51 people to gather wood, water and prepare food the work load for any one person was negligible and we were afforded the opportunity to do almost anything which didn’t require electricity! The only organized activities were a ½ hour of personal prayer time at 9:30am and the praying the Rosary around the campfire at 9:30pm. The stars were not washed out by urban lights and were absolutely brilliant with portions of the Milky Way so dense with stars that areas appeared as a haze in the night time sky. Hard to imagine anything better.Saturday, July 18, 2009
