A new study to be detailed in the upcoming issue of Physical Review Letters puts forth the idea that the Earth may reside within a bubble of space-time that is particularly devoid of matter. Current thinking is that 74 percent of the universe is dark energy, 21 percent dark matter with the balance normal matter. Dark energy is the hypothetical force that could be drawing or pushing everything in the universe outward. If we were in an unusually sparse area of the universe then things could look farther away than they really are and we would be no need to rely on dark energy for an explanation for some observations. If we were in an area with less matter than normal then space-time around us would be different because matter warps space-time. This however would negate the Copernican principle which states that we live in a typical place in the universe not a special place. It is probably bad science to start with a presumption but let us concede that God has made our universe and ask what benefit do we derive from living in this special place?
