Wow!

In the special election to fill the Senate seat formerly held by the deceased Sen. Ted Kennedy, Republican Scott Brown defeated his Democrat opponent and sent shook waves throughout the political landscape. That a Republican who opposed Pres. Obama's healthcare reform and most other presidential initiatives could take the seat held by "the lion of the Senate" in the bluest of states is nothing short of miraculous unless of course your belief system runs to the more pedestrian in which case it was "stunning", "an upset of epic proportions"! An interesting footnote is that today's first reading in the Mass is 1Samuel, the story of David and Goliath!

Prayer for Haiti

Oh, God our Father:
In faith we acknowledge your paternal care over us, your sons, daughters and children. In hope we trust in your divine providence of giving us wisdom and courage as we face the challenges in life. In love we invoke your help and guidance during these difficult days of death and destruction in Haiti.
Ours is a prayer of thanksgiving for once again reminding us that ours is an imperfect world, that heaven is not on earth. Ours too is a prayer of repentance for calling upon you when we are in need and desperation but forgetting you in favorable times and pleasing occasions. Ours as well is a prayer of petition as we say:
Grant eternal peace to those who lost their lives. Embrace the children who died in their innocence. Help those who are hurt and cure those who are sick.
Encourage those who suffer the destruction of their homes and properties, and to once again stand up and rebuild their future.
Bless all those who extend their helping hands to those in need of food, shelter and clothing, who share their time, talents and resources with others.
Inspire more people to be men and women for their neighbors, convinced that the more they are for others, the taller they stand before you.
Spare us please from other natural disasters and devastations if this be according to Your will and for our own spiritual good and growth.
Amen.

Kids!

Some young men who attend Dearborn's Edsel Ford High School have found themselves in hot water after wearing sweat shirts described as "offensive" and in "poor taste" by the schools principle. The teens are members of the Class of 2011 and placed the 11 on the shirt with windows meaning to invoke the Twin Towers with "You can't bring us down" lettered underneath. So far so good, unfortunately they placed the school logo, the Thunderbid, this is Ford country remember, flying toward the towers. The boys like half those who attend Edsel Ford are Arabic. Oops!

Cryogenic Nonsense

The Monday back after the Christmas celebration brings us news of people so afraid of death they are banking on cryogenics, the “ambulance of the future” to allow them to live forever. It is hard to imagine something more lonely, more desperate than wanting to live forever. This life we have is a stop on our soul’s eternal journey not the destination. We will be home when we reach heaven. While the fear of the unknown may be frightening, heaven is known and fearing death because we miss talking to a spouse or loved one is sad, very sad. We are not meant for this world but the next.
